I discovered this after a bit of soul-searching and reflection on my own journey. Like I’ve mentioned before, I used to struggle with anorexia.
Looking at the picture of me to the left you’d never think that I was anorexic—but I was. And the big shift happened when my minded changed.
I can tell you that information, good or bad, was not the source of the problem. Anyone with even a basic understanding of nutrition can figure out that anorexic behavior is unhealthy. There was always a part of me that knew it was destructive, but I kept up the behavior anyway.
The change that saved my life was NOT a new piece of information. It was a change in my mindset. It was a change in my self-esteem and my emotional relationship with food.
Even if your clients aren’t dealing with problems on the level of anorexia, they still need a change in mindset because odds are, they have a bad relationship with food right now. The behaviors that hold them back start with thoughts and emotions that you, as a coach, have the power to change.
That’s why I created a certification course specifically to focus on mindset. Mindset coaching is a practical discipline based on scientific research, and it’s the most powerful set of tools you can add to your fitness business if you want greater results, happier clients, and higher income.

Hopefully, you recognize me from your first two meetings with us! I’m Jason Phillips, founder of the Nutritional Coaching Institute. I discovered the power of nutritional coaching as a young man when I recovered from anorexia and learned that the proper application of food can save lives.

Part One, Morning— The Science
Introduction: What is Mindset?—Simple: it’s how you get your clients out of their own way. Earning your clients’ trust is a teachable skill, and it’s the one critical skill that most fitness professionals overlook. Set yourself apart by mastering mindset and creating sustainable lifestyle changes for your clients.
Chapter 1: Fixed vs. Growth Mindset—Nobody is born with a growth mindset; it must be created. Then, you must keep on training it, just like a muscle. When you master this skill, you’ll turn 91% of those “can’t be helped” clients into eye-popping success stories and transformations.
Chapter 2: Food and Mood—Discover how to avoid the deadly cycle of bad food causing bad moods. Ever had a good client suddenly lose their positive attitude and then hit a plateau? There is the hidden reason why, and we’ll show you how to fix it. Sometimes it will be physiological, sometimes it will be physical—either way, you will be armed with the knowledge to truly help your client.
Chapter 3: Psychology and Coaching—No need for armchair therapy here. These are practical methods you’ll use to turn around your clients’ self-esteem issues and get them focused on creating healthy habits.
Sneak Preview: How to Help Your Clients Discover Their Superpowers
The next time you have a client say they “aren’t strong enough” to reach their goals, ask them this: “What is the most significant thing you’ve accomplished in life?”
They might say it’s their marriage, or raising their kids, or finishing their education. Whatever the answer is, follow up with this: “Did that come with a magic bullet?”
At that point, your client will say, “No.” They did it through hard work and commitment. If they haven’t already gotten to the lightbulb moment, explain to them that they can apply that same hard work and commitment right now to their fitness goals, since they still have that same superpower.
Chapter 4: Mindset Tools—Like training modalities, there are dozens of different modalities that therapists and counselors use to help their clients. We’ve narrowed them all down into a simple set of tools to help you get your clients results. Ever had a client get angry and defensive when you’re just trying to help? Here, you’ll discover why, and what you can do about it.
Part Two, Afternoon — The Application
Chapter 5: Intake—Your clients’ social lives are your new secret weapon. Most coaches and trainers will NEVER ask clients what they do when they go out with friends. For you, this will be the most valuable information for providing better results, especially when you use the questions we have ready for you.
Chapter 6: Changing Thoughts—We all have automatic thoughts that determine our decisions throughout the day. If you want your clients to make better decisions, you need to replace their negative automatic thoughts with positive ones. We’ll show you how, using the eye-opening “best friend” technique.
Chapter 7: Understanding Triggers—Triggers are sneaky. They turn up everywhere and often steer our behavior without us even noticing them. Your clients may not even know what their triggers are until you help uncover them. Once you do, you’ll be able to transform their behaviors and their health like never before.
The Power of Moderation
For many of your clients, their deepest desire is to find happiness, self-esteem, and belonging. That’s why they find it so frustrating to give up on unhealthy holiday foods—it makes them feel like they’re unplugging from their families and their favorite nostalgic memories.
So what if you could let your clients have both? What if you could keep them on track to their results and still let them enjoy their favorite holiday foods?
That’s what Jessica achieved recently with one of her clients who has lost 8 pounds over the last 7 weeks. When they last spoke, this client excitedly told Jessica, “I had Halloween candy on Halloween! I made it fit my macros, and I didn’t feel like I had to eat the whole bag just because I had a piece of candy.”
The key to her success? Zero judgment. Thanks to Jessica’s coaching, the client didn’t judge herself for eating the candy. And, since Jessica didn’t judge her either, they kept on making progress together. As the client told Jessica later, “Any other diet, I would’ve quit.”
Chapter 8: Compliance Issues—If it breaks your heart to see a client lose their motivation or cry over the food they’ve given up, this chapter is for you. Give your clients power over their own decisions and they’ll fall in love with your program, stay loyal, and pay whatever price you ask.
Chapter 9: Coaching Opportunities—Meal plans and templates work until they don’t work. What if instead, you could install something more powerful in your clients? The Power of Mindful Eating
In grad school, Jessica had a classmate who hated peanut butter, but loved to eat Reese’s peanut butter cups. Like most people do when they eat candy, she would just pop the Reese’s in her mouth and scarf it down without thinking much about the flavor.
Their class did an exercise in mindful eating, so naturally this woman chose to eat a Reese’s. As part of the exercise, she had to hold the candy in her mouth without chewing. At that point, all the chocolate melted away and left her with a mound of pure peanut butter. She was disgusted, and realized that she had only been eating Reese’s out of habit.
Have you ever eaten a piece of whole food and realize it has so much more flavor than you thought? Have you ever eaten piece of processed food and realized it tastes so much worse than you remember? That’s the power of mindful eating.
Mindful eating gives you the power to get re-aligned with your own body and give it just the nutrients it wants—no more, no less. Imagine giving this power to your clients. Imagine how much easier it would be to keep them on track…
Chapter 10: Coaching Skills—Discover how to ask the tough questions other coaches WON’T ask so you deliver results they CAN’T create. You’d be surprised how easy this is—your clients came to you hoping you’d be their coach and be real with them. We’ll give you the tools to start the conversation and keep it running smoothly.
Chapter 11: Special Cases—Reverse dieters, chronic dieters, clients with a history of eating disorders, former physique competitors, clients with fertility issues…are these nightmare scenarios, or are these opportunities to prove yourself as the smartest coach in town? How to Be Your Client’s Hero
